Turkey Creek

I needed an easy paddle Sunday, January 6, 2008, after Saturday on (and in) the Weeki Wachee. So I went to Turkey Creek, in Palm Bay. A short paddle, less than an hour from the ramp at Alex Goode Park to the Turkey Creek Sanctuary. The Sanctuary is a wonderful place to get out and walk an extensive boardwalk and other trails. The visitor can see

gopher tortoises in their burrows on land, and

turtles sunning on logs in the Creek.

I saw the two smallest alligators I have ever seen. Not even six inches. Glimpsed the back of one manatee. No dolphins. Here are a few more birds.

This guy said he just finished "Huckleberry Finn" and decided to build a raft. I did not stick around to see if he got it in the water.

These photos are making me want to see it myself--is there a state park near there for camping? Is the boat ramp concrete or sand?

The closest State Park, Sebastain Inlet, is perhaps 30 minutes to the south. The ramp is concrete. I stand on the sand bottom, in the water at the end of the ramp, to get in. Saves wear and tear. Here is an earlier, more detailed report.

Dave: I found out about your blog from Peggy Sherman, the greatest bird photographer I have ever met. Her pics amaze me. Look at my paddling reports on the Green Wave Forum and drop me a line though that contact. Paddlesolo

paddlesolo, I agree. Paddle Tales Peggy pictures are professional quality. And, as the kids would say, awesome. Welcome aboard.
