Rock Springs Run

If you were expecting the usual mid-week Yak Tales paddling post, I did go kayaking on Wednesday, December 9, 2009. Wekiwa Springs State Park, the Wekiva River and Rock Springs Run. But, Tuesday night, my computer broke. To make a long story short, I have replaced my over ten year old system with a new Toshiba laptop. I was on the water at 8:00.

Bucks are still looking for does as mating season winds down. I saw 6 deer, 3 doe and 5 bucks. I think I saw one buck, the one in the opening photo, on the way up and the way down Rock Springs Run. Which was a bit darker than last time I paddled, due to recent rain. Saw the first buck just past the sandbar a short way from the confluence with the Wekiva. A short time later, as I prepared to photo some ibis and egrets, a second buck.

Which, with the third buck of the day, crossed Rock Springs Run twenty yards in front of me. More critters.

The first three bucks dashed away as soon as I spotted them. The fourth ignored me as I paddled a few feet away. Into the wooded area 2.5 miles into the trip, I saw the first doe of the morning. I made it past Indian Mound Camp, beyond the wood posts of the old logging tram, not quite to Big Buck camp, where I turned back. Seeing another buck as I did. Two more does as I headed down Rock Springs Run.

Although it was on the other side of the Run then it had been on the way up stream, I think this is the same buck as in the first photo.

Late fall in Florida.

Anhinga, belted k

My first Tale on the new computer. Off to Sanibel tomorrow, an annual affair with brother Pat and family. I wonder if there's wireless in the condo? If not, nothing until Tuesday. Stay tuned.

Only two canoes on the water as I landed just before 11.

Had my usual after paddle before work snorkel.
