Rock Springs Run

Paddled Rock Springs Run for 5 hours this afternoon, Saturday, February 6, 2010. Had to work in the morning. Not long, only to 11:10. A windy day kept me close to home and the protected waters of the Wekiva River and Rock Springs Run.

Cool, for Florida, the wind making it cooler under blue skies. Pants and windbreaker. Less than 10 boats from Wekiwa Springs to Rock Springs Run. Another ten or so on Rock Springs Run.

The three primitive campsites were empty. One, Indian Mound, became occupied. Crossed paths with two families coming down the Run on an "Annual Super Bowl Camping Trip"

I paddled up Run to a little past 2:30, 20 minutes after I saw what I assume would be the last down stream paddler. I assumed correctly.

No alligators, deer, otters or bears today. Highlight of the day was watching a large branch fall off a tree. I heard crackling noises, saw the tree, away from me, the branch starting to break, slowly, slowly, then Crash ! In the reeds of the down Run open section. Hoped it might flush some wildlife, no such luck.

Landed at 5:20. No snorkel in the Spring. Drove to Sand Lake. Walked around the small lake, , a "borrow pit" and environs, for about twenty minutes. No deer. Saw one deer on the way out of Wekiwa Springs State Park.

Time now to think about where I'm going tomorrow. Space Shuttle Launch scheduled for 4:39 am. A bit to early for me
