Wekiva River, Rock Springs Run

I'm set until April 30, 2014.  World's best deal for $60.00.   With the pass that expired yesterday, I paid $1.33 per visit to Florida State Parks from March 3, 2013 until Saturday at Blue Springs State Park.
Didn't want to miss out on 2 days, so I went to Wekiwa Springs State Park after work.  The 25 mile drive around the urban sprawl that is the Orlando metro area took just over an hour.   Paid for the new pass, carted the kayak down the hill, and was on the water at 6:58.
Green heron.  Several in the lagoon.  Nest building, from the twigs one was carrying.
 Turtle
Alligator
 Another alligator
Great blue heron
 Blue heron
Gator
 Wood storks, 7:06 PM
If only have 45 minutes before sunset, its good to see a lot in a short time

 Rock Springs Run
Turned back at 7:29

Back to the Wekiva River

Swallow tail kite

 Juvenile black crowned night heron
Landed at 7:53
Half way up the hill, looking down at Wekiwa Springs, 8:00
In the car, 8:13

Back in the good old days, I used to do an occasional weekday morning paddle on the Wekiva, and Rock Springs Run.  The new location, been there since October, 2012, is too far away.  So, Lake Maitland, tomorrow.

  1. Hey Dave,
I came across your site while trying to research for a good 2-3 day kayak/canoe run. Myself and three friends have had a "guy trip" planned for the past 4 months... 2 nights/3 days, down the Suwannee. Now that we are only a few days away from leaving for the trip, we are finding out that kayaking and canoeing are strongly advised against right now, since the heavy rains has caused flood warnings.
Would you be able to point me to another go run that we could do over a few days? Our general established area is the North Florida area, possibly the upper portion of mid-Florida.

Wekiva River and Rock Springs Run. Just north of Orlando. You would launch from Kings Landing

http://kingslandingfl.com/camping/ get one of the three campsites on Rock Springs Run one night
    http://www.floridastateparks.org/wekiwasprings/activities.cfm#14

Then camp on the Wekiva the second night.
