Wekiva River

Kayaked the Wekiva River today.  Launched  from Katie's Landing at 9:24.

 The Wekiva is high, past the barriers that block motorized boats from using the canoe and kayak launch location.

 

Hibiscus?

The high water level has the Wekiva flowing quickly.  We let the current do most of the work.  The view above is looking downstream at 11:14, just before turning around.   Did not reach Blackwater Creek.  But we did go farther than 3 other pairs of downstream and back paddlers.

 One of only two alligators.  A combination of too much heat, and too many motorboats.  8 or so.

Swamp lily

All the rain has resurrection ferns and other air plants in full bloom.  And has animals well hidden.  No reason to come to the bank to feed.  Plenty of water far into the swamp.

The blue and tri colored were just before Wekiva Haven.  My friend saw prothonotary warblers.  I did not. We both had a brief glimpse of a swallow tail kite.

 The great egret was in the same area.  I suggested we  take the route on the west side of the island just past Wekiva Haven.  Maybe the high water carved a channel.

 It did not, but my paddling partner did. Or is that a coolie harvesting rice?

Landed at 1:24 as thunder boomed.  The sign is usually on land.
